| There was a fair attendance, at St. I Mary’s Club euchre tournament last evening. The prizewinners were Mias K. O’Connor, Mesdames J. Breeze and McCloud, and Mr. 11. Rolling. After supper a dance was held, the music being kindly provided by Mrs Bennett. There were people who were apt to forget (said the Hon. A. T. Ngata at Wellington on Monday), that in this war there were Maoris fighting side by side with New Zealanders . They had known that the Maori would fight, well, but it had surprised them to find that ho was also a; “stayer!’. They had doubted whether be would stand the intense cold of Flanders but he had stayed right on. Mr. A. Cederman of tho Gibson Quay foundry has just completed to ardor an aluminum motor-car gear box. Ho lias made an excellent job of the casting, which has been clearly made nrul well machined. It is an article that reflects every credit on the maker and shows the capability of the moulder and those responsible for the machining, the completed box, weighing about 35 lbs.

There will he. on sale the usual cakes, preserves, product) and sweets, and in addition a host of novelties, lucky bags and surprises. Tlio children are being specially catered for and they have risen to the occasion loyally. The members of tho Ladies Literary Chib who are in oliarge for the day request that gifts suitable for sale be sent to the depot early. As quite a large supply has been received. Mr. Preston has kindly given the use of the shop adjoining the depot where children’s “lucky bags” will bo on sale. These bags aro full of wonderful gifts and are excellent value. ’ «
The Mission to Lepers in India is an interdenominational and international society founded in 1874 and ranks ns one of the best and most beneficent of Christian activities under the British rule in India. Tinder the care of the Society there are 50 asylums for lepers in India, Burma, China, Japan, and Korea. There are 20 homes for untainted children leprous parents. No less than 11,550 lepers and children are segregated and 88 stations at which the Mission is working. The lepers of India are estimated at 250,000. This dreadful malady among the Indian people is only part of the White Man’s burden, part of the. Christian man’s burden in India. The Society referred to is under t-lie host direction and receives the highest commendation. Indian statesmen and viceroys commend it. The President is the Lord Primate of Ireland, and it has for vice Presidents representative men of Britain and America. Tn New Zealand the society is also represented . The Rev. Frank Oldricvo of Ashburton is the representative in the South Island. He arrives in Hokitika on Saturday night- He will give an address in the Methodist church on Sunday morning and in the evening in the Presbyterian church on “What I saw in Tndia.” .Tie will give n lantern lecture in St. Andrew’s Hall on Tuesday night.”
