f ADMIRALTY—PER WIRELESS PRESS.] ('Received this day at 1.20 a.m.,) LONDNO, Aug. 23: A German communique says strong English attacks near St. Julian .were repulsed. A iresh engagement has developed between roads from St. Aidan and Messines towards Ypres. There was bitter hand to hand fighting around Lens, shell-fire igniting a coal depot, which is still m English hands. The French repeatedly stormed and obtained a footing on knolls eastward of Avocourt Wodo. French attacks on the eastern hank of the-Meuse, secured a footing in the southern part of Samagneux. Otherwise, the massed attacks were repulsed forcing the enemy to replenish ten divisions. Strong Roumanian attacks south of Trotsu Valley were repulsed, with heavy enemy losses. GERMAN REPORT.
