On Monday last Mr. It. O. Speed, dredgomaster of tho Success dredge, when cycling down tho llau Hau hill to Hokitika met with a serious accident, his bicycle collapsing, and he was thrown heavily and stunned, it being some time betore he was able to drag himself to Mr. Mark’s residence and obtain assistansco. Mr. Speed was badly lacerated about tho face hands and arms and bruised severely, but luckily uo bones were broken. He was removed to Westland Hospital for treat meat where ho is progressing satisfactorily.
Billie Burke held quite a, lovoo at the Princess Theatre yesterday. This a tractive young lady arrived in her travelling dress and with her baggage consisting of hamper, Saratoga, wraps and what not, occupied quite an amount of attention to herself. Tonight the young lady will display some of her evening gowns, which are all after the latest Paris models. A largo number of autographs are being secured by,, this young lady, and she is handing over the whole of the money to j tho patriotic funds. Mre E. J. Thomas, of Cobdon, has received advico that her eon, Private Richard Thomas, had been killed in action. The late Private Thomas, who left New Zaland in March last with the 23rd Reinforcements, was 29 years of age, and was very well known in athletic circles on the Coast. He was a. keen sport and took a very octavo part in football, hockey and oricket. Prior to enlisting he was employed with the Government survey party. He leaves a mother, sister, and brothers to mourn their loss. Police Inspector Phair, until recently in charge of the West Coast district., retires from the police force at the end of the present month, after 40 years service. Inspector Phair will he succeeded at Waikato by Inspector Sheehan, of Auckland. James Thomas Corbett, arrested* at Big River mine on Tuesday last on a military warrant as a deserter, was brought before Mr T. Hutchison, at Greymouth Courthouse yesterday morning, and charged (1) that he failed to give notice of the change of abode as required by the Military Service Act; and (2) being a Reservist under the Military Service Act he did without the lawful written consent of the Minister of Internal Affairs assume a name other than that by which he was customarily known. Senior-Sergeant Simpson appeared on behalf of the police. Ihe accused, who pleaded guilty to botli charges, was sentenced to two months’ hard labour in Greymouth gaol. The Lady Liverpool depot will be open in Re veil street to-morrow afternoon and evening as usual for the sale of gifts for the benefit of the Soldiers’ Christmas comforts. Shortly after 2 p.m., on Saturday interest in the racing, at Riccarton was entirely interrupted by the arrival over the course of an aeroplane from the Canterbury Aviation Company’s grounds. The big biplano, with Hill at tho helm, flew over the course in a steady breeze, and, amidst the cheers of tho spectators gave an exhibition of flying, banking high in turning until the cart-wheel was nearly down, and nose-diving, followed by a steady planing with his engine shut off. He circled'round tho course several times, flying now high, now low. The machine was put through its paces gracefully and easily. Several- times the aviator passed up and down over the lawn, and after coming low to wave an acknowledgment of tho applause, he mounted again and made off hack to tho aviation ground at Canterbury Park, after providing at once an entertaining interlude and a fine lesson of tho ease and confidence with which the expert birdman can flv.
