THIRTY-THIRD REINFORCEMENTS

FARE WELLED AT TOWN HALL

LIBERTY LOAN RESOLUTION.

There was a crowded attendance at the Town Hall Inst night when m eonjunction with the scud-oil' to the 33n1. reinforcements was held a public meeting in connection with the Liberty M ar Loan, convened by the Deputy Mayor.

Proceedings opened with the singing of the National Anthem. The Overseas Orchestra supplied two overtures while songs were rendered by Misses Woodlouse and Perry, and duets by Misses Perry and Harvey and Misses Davidson and Macandrew, Mr. Gibbous playing a piccolo' solo. Hearty encores were jjjiven, each periornter Misss M. Macfarlane and Daly Were the accompanists.

Mr. H , M . Coul son Qpo'ned the ! speeches stating that the Finance Mini- j st.er had sent a circular inviting the cooperation of the people of New Zealand in furthering the success of the Liberty War Loan of twelve millions, and after consultation with the President of the Overseas Club and other citizens it had been decided to bold a public meeting in conjunction with the send-ofl that evening to the lfoiitfomMiilents Mr. C'oulson made a telling speech with a fervid appeal to all present to do their utmost to make the Loan a great success, asking one and all to put in their mite, large or small, and so do their part towards winning the war. Mr. 11. L. .Michel, speaking in his usual forceful manner, made a strong appeal for the co-operation of the people to make the Loan a success. He pointed out that we were sending men and more men and it was our duty to '■ money and more money to enable the wants of our soldiers to be met. He moved that the meeting express its approval and support of the Liberty War Loan and that those present pledge themselves to do their utmost to ensure its successful flotation; further that the Hokitika Borough Council be requested to take .into careful consideration the advisability of taking up a substantial amount of me Loan.. Mr. Michel said be felt that the Council should be able to take up £3,000 of the loan, which would mean more than an annual cost of £37, 10s. It would show that loyal Hokitika was

still prepared to do its part in winning the war. Mr. W. D. Mack ay seconded the motion endorsing the remarks of the previous speakers and urging on his hearers the necessity of making every effort to ensure the success of th loan. Ho concluded by expressing, his )>esl , wishes to the departing soldiers and j :t safe return. Mr. (1. Davidson supported tlm motion, and in a forceful address traversed the many issues arising out of the war and the urgent necessity there was for carrying it to a successful conclusion pointing out that the supply of funds was at present an urgent necessity, in which the people staying at home could do their part by participating in the loan. The motion was then put by the Deputy-Mayor and carried unanimous-

Mr. D J. Evans (President of the Overseas Club) returned thanks to the performers for their assistance and those present for their attendance. He announced that the next farewell would held four weeks hence. Referece was then made to the Bazaar in aid of the Soldiers’ Association beng held next evening (to-night) and an appeal was made for cordial support to he extended.

Proceedings then terminated with the singing of the National Anthem.

Subsequently the soldiers performers and friends were entertained, at supper at* the Overseas. Club Rooms.
