STILL DESPERATELY DEPENDED
Received this day at 2.38 p.m.,) . LONDON August 22. Tho United Press Headquarters correspondent reports heavy fighting continue* about Lens and Ypres. The British at daybreak attacked positions between Langemark and Freezenberg. / The battle is progressing. The Bavarians aro fighting desperately amongst the ruins of Lens. The Canadians despite two violent counter-attacks in rapid succession suoeeedod in establishing their advanced posts. The Canadians at one time were fighting into Lens proper, the Germans pouring up from concreted cellars and mineshafts like ants from disturbed ant 1&1b. v Tho Crown Prince threw in the Firth Grenadiers beginning with the First Prussian Guards reserve divisions. Portions of at least six divisions are concentrated against the Canadians showing the importance the High Command attaehee to Lens.
