Sir Douglas Haig reports that we maintained the positions captured yestreday on the outskirts of 'Lens. Further progress was secured at certain points also additional ground northwestward and northward of Lens, as the result of heavy fighting wherein we repulsed strong counter-attacks. There is artillery activity eastward and north-east of Ypros. NEW FRENCH GUN. (Received This Gay at 11.25. a.m.) PARIS, August 22. Germans made several strong attacks in the region of Mecgean farm east of Braye, south of Lebovelle and be tween Allies and Hurtebise * monument, and California Plateau. We entirely' maintained our positions everywhere. We took prisoners and repulsed violent counter-attacks yesterday between Hill 304 and Morthomme. A brilliant counter offensive drove ont tho enemy elements which obtained a footing in our new front lino.
