The deceased was. a native of County Waterford Ireland, and 83 years of nge. He came to tho colonies nearly sixty years ago. For about 22 year R he was mining at Lake Mapourikn. Then ho went to Rnnu and worked for some time and for the last 14 years ho has been residing in North Rovell Street. Of a quiet peaceful disposition, ho maue many friends, who will hear of his end with sorrow.

There was n big audience at Princess Theatre last evening when Mr. Pollard presented what was essentially a children’s programme. It proved highly diverting. A Topical Budget was followed by a great laughter making Keystone comedy “Pills of Peril” which caused plenty of merriment by the many incidents of tho production. Tho star feature was “Cinderella” in which" tho ever popular Alary Pickford took the title role. The old time favourite story was excellently pourtrayod and it proved its old time - popularity has not faded by thq welcomo of the pleased auditors.

~ A sei'ious accident happened on Saturday night at tho Little Waitaha river crossing on tho South road, with the result that Air. David Diedrich’s fine motor oar was destroyed. Accompanied hv Messrs T. R. Hickson and J J. Breeze, he was on the way to Hari Hari, and just before attempting to cross the ford an explosion occurred, and the oar took fire. The night was dark and stormy, and the car was soon completely demolished, nothing remaining, hut the Iron work, The party returned to Air S. Ferguson’s accommodation house for the night, which is about half a mile away, and then came hack to Hokitika yesterday.

Tho ladies connected with the Overseas Club have put in several weeks steady work to prepare for tho monster sale of work at the Princess Theatre next week. Afrs. W. E. Williams has been directing a linen and fancy work stall, and having had tho assistance of many willing helpers, some dainty goods have been prepared, and these will make a fine disnlav. Airs. Evans has been in charge of tho plain sewing bees, and quite an array of useful articles have been made up. Patrons from town and country will be-attract-ed by the display, so all the goods are sure' of a ready sale. The proceeds from this si del of the bazaar should bo, very helpful to the movement to provide the returned soldiers with more commodious elub-room quarters.
