MILITARY SERVICE BOARD.
MONDAY, Aug. 13
A sitting of the above Board was held at 10 o’clock when the were present Messrs J. S. Evans S.M. (Chairman), J. D. Milton, and E. C. Studholme. ('apt. Pilkington Military Representative and Mr. A. W. Duncan (Secretary) were also present. John Collett of Matainui,—Appellant had his appeal adjourned sine, die, last February. Ho was managing the farm of Mr. Dennehy, also that of the late Private J. Burrough, who had recently been killed while on active service. Appellant had also a farm of his own. He also has a brother who is also in the. First Division, ami a married one, a mill-hand. Appellant had not previous ly enlisted. The Chairman stated as his brother is classed as C. 2 and none are at present serving or enlisted, it will he necessary for his brother to take both Dennehy’s farm and own. But as you have two children you Vviu bo allowed until the November drafts. Andrew Oliver Scott (Mr. Sellers) of Okuru.—Appellant who had met with an accident last week, stated ho .was 2(5 years old, a farrnor, and had two brothers, ono under age, and one still on active service. Appellant and his younger brother wore managing the farm. Aujourned sino die. Jane Irwin, appealed on behalf of her son, John Irwin of Woodstock, (Mr. Wells). —Jane Irwin stated that boson was her only support. Ho is 42 years of age. Thero is one brother at present serving in France. Ho left with the sth roinforements. Her son is at present working in a sluicing claim. He was keeping a grain! child amUftP invalided sister. The Chairman’'stated tliaf Mrs Irwin liad no ground of appeal Only tho son or hi s employer could appeal. He also stated that this was clearly a case where this woman should have -support of £1 weekly from the Patriotic Fund. On Mr. Wells undertaking to move promptly in the matter of support from the Patriotic Fund, the case was adjourned for a mbnth. Mr. Murdoch stated that the case was a deserving one, nnd the Society would do anything within reaso*. Patrick Sarsfield Heslan (Mr. Sellers) .of Kokatahi.— Captain Pilkington stated that he lmd received a letter
from the Adjutant at Foatherstqp, which stated that a diligent search of tlio correspondence failed to reveal a copy of the letter Heslnn holds. The letter stated that appellant j s still held to be a member of tho Camp Force. The Chairman stated as appellant is a soldier, the Board had no power to deal with the matter. Appeal dismissed. 'William Brown of Blue Spur (Mr. Murdoch) —Appellant slated ho was a gold-miner working at Blue Spur. Appellant has threo brothers at the front. Ho is now driving a tunnel at Blno Spur. Appellant' could not got any suitable person to work the tunnel. IT is brother’s appeal was adjourned sine die on June 18th. Appellant stated he and his brother were working for the Success dredge for three weeks.
•Captain Pilkington stated ho had been informed that appellant’s brother had : worked on the Success Prod go for, months. This was denied by appellant./ The Chairman stated that as throe, sons, had gone to tho front, this was the reasou why the case was bein". considered. Continuing, the Chairman stated that tho fact of his -being a miner did not make him an essential. A miner must produce gold before, he can bo essential to tho country. The Chairman stated that his brothers appeal was adjourned so as to have a man left to work the claims. Ho considered that the family had a splendid record. If necessary tho Hoard would grant ample protection. Appeal dismissed. Frederick Carl Karnbach (Mr. Murdoch) of Tvokatahi—'The Chairman stated that be saw no reason why appellant should not go as be had plenty of brothers-in-law and other relations. The appeal would be dismissed, and he | was allowed until the October draft. i Thomas James Meharry (Mr. Mur-1 dnhh) of Tipper (Kokatahi. —A- letter j ns received from the Efficiency Board t stating that as there wore only 14 cows j to milk, those remaining would have J to take charge of the farm. The appeal j would ho dismissed and, appellant al-j lowed until the October draft. j Joseph Patrick O’Donnell (Mr. Mur- j doeh) of Kumara.—Bridget O’Donnell, mother of appellant, stated that her son’s age was 33, and ho was single. Both her and her husband were solely dependant on appellant, who is livmg with her, and is working at a sawmn». Appellant stated there were three sisters married and one single sister, all away from the district, j Captain Pilkington stated that apI pell ant had been drawn in the Sixth Bal lot in April and tho notice to appeal • was not lodged until July 17th. In reply to the complaint of the lateness ' of his appeal, the appellant stated that his notice was not received until a day
