The value of jfche telephone fire alarm was exemplifies last night when the alarm was given from Mr. Andrewes’ residence. The fire call was taken at Foreman Ross’ residence with the result that the Gibson Quay hoso reel was on its way to the fire before tne big bell could bo, reached to give the alarm. The promptness of the alarm saved tho building from total destruction.

The death took place at the Westland Hospital yesterday of Miss Maria Manern of Bosk. Tho deceased was admitted in a serious condition a few days before. She was a native of tne Ross district and 24 years,of age, and leaves a mother and three sisters (Mrs. Wood of Upper Gibson’s Quay, Mrs. JTaines of Ruatapu and Miss Manera of Hokitika') and four brothers wellknown residents of the, Waitaha district.

The funeral of the late Mr. Jonn Jlehan took place to Hokitika cemetery yesterday afternoon. There was 3 largo attendance including a number of mourners from the north. The Rev. Father Clancy assisted by the Rev. Father Creed of Kumara, conducted "the services at St. Mary’s Church and the graveside. There were a number of floral tributes ' including wreaths from West Coast Licensed Victuallers and Worker’s Union at Otira. The firebells rang out a: vigorous alarm of fire last night at 7.20. o’clock. The scene of the outbreak was a tworoomed cottage in Park Street at the rear, of Mr. G. McCollum’s residence occupied by Mr. H. McCallum. The fire had a good hold when discovered, but was soon extinguished. The FireBrigade got to the scene with promptitude but only the services of one line of hose was required. Tho interior of the cottage was gutted and . damage done to the contents. The firo damage was comparatively small. The occupier was at church at the time.

The Lady Liverpool Committee had a busy week-end, which again gave satisfactory results. The receipts on Saturday were about £16.. Next Saturday Mesdames Bennett and Benjamin will ho in charge, and these ladies are now organising for the occasion. Gifts of goods for tho sale from town and country folk will he welcomed.
