ROSS NEWS.
FAREWELL SOCIAL
TO MR AND MRS L. HILLS, MR AND MRS W. 0. JONES AND MR AND MRS W. E, PHILLIPS.
(Our Own Correspondent.) A A very enthusiastic gathering took place in Totara Hall oji Monday n ! S ]lt to say good-bye to three worthy couples who are leaving Ross for pastures new. Not often are we',so unfortunate as to lose three pairs of such citizens at one time. The large gathering evidenced their popularity, and appreciation of the citizenship of the departing guests.
Mr Hills has been Postmaster for ■fix years. Mr Jones lias been associated until the Mont d.’or Coy for 14 years, and during the last four years was its capable manager. Mr and Mrs Phillips was Wavdsmnn and Matron of our hospital for 10 years. The Mayor in making each of these respected couples a small presentation (Mr and Mrs Hills, a tea-set; Mr and Mrs Jones, a tea-set, .Mr and Mrs Phillips, a set of table, desert,,'and tea spoons), voiced the very, general
opinion of all present, at the close of; which all joined in heartily singing
“ For They Are Jolly Good Fellows.” Mr Hills humorously replied at length, mentioning the progress made at our local Post Office.
. . Mr Jones briefly stated that anything he had done in public life was for the good of the place. Mr Phillips briefly thanked oneand all for their goodwill. , /
We all feel the loss of these cit izens as each in their several spheres have faithfully carried out, not only their duties to their employers, but l/ave also shared in a marked degree she general welfare and patriotic assistance given in this time of stress and trouble by and district, j
J Messrs Hills and Jones have been members of our Patriotic Committee since its inception, whilst Mrs Phillips has been unfailing in helping each and every function . for many year's. Both these gentlemen have been associated with Hospital •Committee',, school, sports, .’swinuping, Debating), Society, library, and anything that stands for the betterment of the town -
As a Councillor for many years Mr Jones stood out as the most fearless and candid member of any local body in tire Dominion. He cared not
whether his actions pleased or ’displeased. lie said what he thought, and often verified that trite aphorism “ veritas . odi am parit,” truth begets hatred. He never headed the poll at an election, but that never deterred him from speaking . out direct to the point.
The usual form of socials was successfully carried out, also the inevitable supper was supplied by a willing committee of ladies, who appear to be always ready when wanted. This farewell function was only started on Saturday night last, but was nevertheless highly successful and enthusiastic.
