ON THE BRITISH FRONT.
steady fighting. (rer Press Association. —Copyright.) (Received. This Day at 8.50. a.m.) LONDON. July 23. Mr. BJhilip G*ibbs 'says sjhufc {th:© German .thrust at Lombartzydo on the 10th. there have been no important actions on the British front, but many raids, nfinor activities and shell ing sometimes of great violence about Lens Ypro.s and close to the coast. The enemy has been suffering great wastage. A single division which went to Lons has been burying eighty Germans daily. For several weeks blood has flowed in a steady stream from tho Germans at Lens. The Germans retaliate by shelling Wytsehaete, Me seines Armentieres and Loos but their bombardment doe g not reveal any definite purpose. The enemy pour out gas shells and we retaliate with gas clouds, which creep into the German craters and trenches and kill any man taking a breath. The enemy were particularly ferocious in the bombardment to-day be tween Lobartyzde and Nieuport, using many gas shells being apparently doubtful where the next blow will fall. and trying to do as much damage as possible before it happens, when the heavy gun# must Hurry back as they did at AVytsschate and Mes§ine*.
