The fortnightly meeting cf tho Council was held at 7.45 p.m. Present reMessrs G. A. Perry (Mayor), H. M. Coulson G. Wood, Jas King R. M. lung ; A. E. Stapleton, S. J. Preston and H. ■ Thompson, I SPECIAL MEETING.
The -Mayor reported that- tho balance sheet for the year ended 31st March 1917 had been returned by tho Auditor General, duly certified to without tags. Mr. Coulson moved that tho balance sheet he signed by the Mayor and certified to as Seconded by Mr. J. King and carried. The Town Clerk was authorised _ to make the usual arrangement’s for printing and publishing the balance sheet. ORDINARY MEETING. The minutes of'last meeting were road and confirmed, and the outward correspondence read and approved. . i INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. I j From Agricultural Department, Wel- [■ lington, acknowledging letter conveying decision to continue the present salary of the abattoir manager.—Received. From M. H. Houston, agent for C. E. Hannam, asking for use again of the water supply for the butchery.— Received and agreed to. - FromGreymouth Borough Council asking consideration to motion urging appointments to Legislative Council. —Received, already replied to. From Hokitika Fire Board notifying the levy on Borough for year was £156. —Received. i From Prime Minister, Wellington acknowledging resolution urging appoint pointment of a Westland representative in the Legislative Council and promisjng consideration- —Received. | From J. J. Clarke, in connection with : rates on a: property of which ho ht-ld a mortgnge and pointing out the hardship of collecting tho rates from him.—Re- ■ coived; no action taken. i From J. E. Olsen, stating he was not , prepared to pay more than 30s for leas® of reserve 474.—Received and lease oancelled as requested. From T. Condon offering £2 10s for ! lease of reserve No 474, free of rates.— " Received and offer accepted. j From Westland Acclimatisation : Society applying for the usual grant Jn ; aid.—Received ; and usual grant of £5 was made. —From Dowell Bros, complaining of the, water lying in front of their premises and asking for attention. Received and referred to Public Works Committee to attend to. From A. W. Yarrall drawing attention to road and drain in front of his premises, and asking for attention. —Received, referred to Public Works Committee to attend to. Form J. E. Dawson, asking for permission to continue use of sewerage shaft, and asking for attention to drain ' i n front of his premises:—Received; the first request was refused and tho second one is to be attended to when the Sale Street drain was being deepened. From Renton and Co., stating as tho proposed site for dangerous goods had not been approved, they now proposed to erect it on the site of tho woodpipe factory. Received. Tho Mayor thought the proposed site would be satisfactory if it did not interfere with those near, by. Mr Preston strongly protested at allowing the erection of a building for tli'e storage of benzine anywhere near any residences. Ho thought it should ho 500 yards away. The Mayor said he was of opinion that the site was a safe one. Ho thought Mr. Preston exaggerated tho danger. -"Mr Coulson said while safeguarding tho people he thought they should moot the wishes of Renton Bros, as far as possible. After discussion, consideration wa's deferred till next meeting, the Council to meantimo visit the proposed sito. REPORTS. From treasurer reporting nAoeipfis £2lO 18s lOd; payments £376 19s Od; credit balance, £417 13s 9d.—Received. From Finance Committee reeommending payment of accounts amounting to £167 11s Id, —Received and adopted. From Overseer reporting on work carried out during tho period, and works, in hand at present also advising that the gravel contract wns expiring.—Re-' eeivod and adopted, fresh tenders to he' invited. From Manager of Abattoirs reporting for June there were examined, 11 cows, 55 bullocks, 192 sheep, 16 lambs, 3 pigs, 7 calves. Condemned 2 bullocks. Fee* j for month £43 8s 3d.—Received. | From Inspotor of Nuisances annual j report on inspection of the town and j the action taken to have the bye-laws 1 given effect to.—Received and approved R. M. King drew attention to .the absence of seats on Cass Square and on his suggestion the matter was referred to tho Reserves Committee to attend to. Tho Council rose at 8.30 p.m. |
