ORCHESTRAL CONCERT.
A DISTINCT.SUCCESS. Vliere was a large and enthusiastic- audience at the Prinetss Theatre last evening when the concert arranged in aid of the-funds of the Overseas Chub’s patriotic work took place. Th e programme was a capital one. tho items including a 'number of National and patriotic numbers. A mint her of visitors from Greymouth kindly, gave their assistance and their presence added to a great extent in the general success achieved. Proceedings opened with the National Antjiem hv t-he Orchestra, consisting of Pianiste Miss Duly A.T.C.--. : Violins, Miss Hatch. Miss Hannan, Miss Foster; Messrs Balthrop, Stubbs and Staff an; Clarionet Master Roy Nalder; Cornet Mr. L. Ross; Euphonium. Air. E. Dawson; Flute C. Gibbons,; Double B. Air. C. Ross; Conductor, Air. AV. E. Perry. Their numbers included tire following selections, ‘‘Gents of Scottish Melody.” -Sunshine and Roses,” Stars and Stripes” ‘“(-Songs of England” and “Irish Beauties.” Each and every selection was a gem of its own and’ gave great pleasure to the audience who freely applauded the several selections. Air Alfred King of Greyniouth, the , possessor of a fine baritone voice was hoard to good effect in his two solos “The Skipper” and ‘Alone on the Raft” giving encore numbers, with equal success in answer to undeniable recalls. His Pomeranian dog won a round of applause. at its tricky exposition in the second half. M iss May AlcLean, who lias become popular with local audiences was in good voice in her solo ‘.‘The Silver lling”. and ber encore number.was a dainty one. -Miss Edna Perry who has not been heard in public since her Christchurch successes met wit'll.a very flattering reception, her welcome being a very warm one. The young lady was -n excellent voice and her two songs “Night” and “The Lord is Afy Light” were decided teats, while the two encore numbers were given with much daintiness, Miss Hannan A.T.C.L. of Greyniouth, in addition to assisting with the orchestra, gave a vocal solo “The Heroes of t-he Dardanelles.” This was charmingly given and well deserved (he hearty-recall that followed. Air. C. Gibbons is always welcome with his flute solos and his selection was as heartily received as ever, a well deserved recall being given. Mr. K. Stubbs of Greyniouth with a violin so h> wqs another excellent item that received a hearty recall, his encore number proving equally enjoyable. An instrumental duet by Messrs Dawson and L. Ross (euphonium and cornet), was! loudly applauded. I Before the last item Air. de Berry,' Vice-President of the Overseas Club returned thanks to the audience for their • substantial support, to the. Greyniouth visitors for their kind attendance and assistance, and to t-h» conductor and members of the Orchestra and other performers for the very enjoyable musical treat that had, been given. Air. de Rerry took the opporfuniy of expressing the pleasure felt by the Community at the recent- successes of Aliss Edna Perry and gratification at her presence, remarks that were endorsed by the audience. The accompanists during the evening were Misses Daly, Davies and Air. Lawn. Tlie Town Band wer e present, ami played n number of selections outside the Thejrtre prior tothecominencemesit of the concert. A verse of the National 'Anthem by the orchestra brought to a close a highly successful concent and the large audience will endorse the hope expressed by the Chairman in. his remarks that (the present one will 'he only t-he first of a series of musical treats to he arranged by the Overseas Orchestra, which has made such a decided success of ;■:« initial effort.
