The Elder Dempster steamer Addah was submarined without warning on Juno 15th. After the vessel ras hit tho submarine, hitherto unseen, ©merged and fired while th© boats w ©re lowering and hit the Addah seven times. - Th© submarine cam© alongside the Chief Officer’s boat before the ship wink and put one of its officers and four men aboard. They proceeded t° board the Addah, and after a couple ! of minutes returned to the submarine and told the Chief Officer’s boat to clear out. - Meanwhile tho master’s boat, which was already badly smashed by, a sub- * marine shell, was thirty to forty .yard* : distant. . I The submarine re-opened fire anc | shrapnellod the master’s boat, killec eight and tor e the boat’s stem righj off. The submarine continued shrap j nelling the swimming men after th , boat sank. I Tho submarine commander though l to finish everybody in the- y master 1 i boat, and fired eight shrapnel ,at thi 1 chief officer’s boat. Fortunately n< body was killed, though several wer< slightly wounded, and the boat wa: j badly damaged. The commander wav ed to the chief officer to go and pic. up the master and other., swimmers and then made off. c A French patrol steamer picked u. these victims of barbarism.
