Yesterday a cable message was received from Lieut. A. "Winchester of Rosa, now Somewhero in France, intimating that he and his brothor Tom were “all well.” This was pleasing news to the young men’s relatives, and will bo gratifying also to their many friends up and down the Coast. At the Town Hall on Thursday night there will be a special evetoing for tho Westland Returned Soldiers’ Association when a euchre tournament, for which specal prizes are offered, will take place followed by a social dance. The ladies of the Overseas Club will arrange for a supply of refreshments. This special function should draw a very large attendance. Last! Friday at Wataroa the settlers gathered in force to tender a recoption and a farewell to Mr. James Gunn, the fourth son of Mrs Gunn, the well-known Wataroa family. Jim, who has been in the North Island for some time, lately enlisted, following in the footsteps of other brothers who have gone to the front. Ho was visiting his.old home to see his mother, and relatives before leaving for somewhere in Europe. The social and dance organised in his honor was a great success, and the gathering was kept in full swing to the early hours of Saturday morning. During the evening the young Coaster, who is a fine type of New Zealand soldier, was presented with a gold sovereign case, and very hearty were the speeches of appreciation made jn his honor .
