WEST COAST CASUALTIES

WELLINGTON, June 23. The following are included in the latest casualty lists: — WOUNDED.

A. G. Gibson, Canterbury Battalion, Juno 7th. —Mrs ■ F. M. Gibson, Westport, mother. T. Z. O’Neill, Machine Gum C ; rps, Juno Bth..—Mrs W. O’Neill, Westport, mother. A. E. Lines, Otago Infantry, June Bth Mrs A. E. Lines, West Coast*, mother. / R. E. Black, Westport, (Sovero case).

Lieut. 11. F. Cotter, formerly cadet in the Customs office at Westport, has died of wounds in France. He enlisted at. Wellington. Lieut. Cotter was a Buller representative footballer.

Sergt H. G. Stephen was admitted to Walton-on-Thames Hospital on the llt.h inst. suffering from gun-shot wound In the leg. Sergeant Stephen- enlisted in Westport in the Eighth Contingent, and has been on active service' about two years.

Tlie report that Rifleman F. Keenan of Rimu was wounded is not confirmed. A rifleman of the same name Gisborn© appears in the casualty list, and this similarity of names has evidently given rise to the mistaken identity.

Buller casualties include the following —Rifleman R. Scobie, Te Namu; Private Gibson, Westport; # Gunner T. O’Neill, Westport; Private Robert* A. Rodgers, Westport; Private C. A. Perry (brother of Mr. W. G. Perry), Westport ; Dispenser W G. Brosnalian, Westport ; Private O’Connor, (fiephew of Mrs D. O’Leary, Westport.)

Mr and Mrs T. Heonan of Revell Street lmv© been advised that their son l , Private Vincent J. Heonan was wounded on June 7th the second occasion. The young man went with the 13th reinforcements and has had a bad run He was wounded in th e fac© previously at the Somme and later sprained his ankle and had to go back t° hospital being only out h few weeks.

Mrs M. Clarke of Ar n ey Street, Grevmoutli was advised yesterday that her fourth son, I' "vat? C. A. Clarke was wounded and gassed on June 9th on the West Front. Private Clarke, whoso injuries ar© stated in th© message as severe, left with the 9th i®inforcements, nnd was only recently discharged from hospital and returned to tho firing lin 6 - '

An exchange says that Privato Frederick Fuller Smeo, died of wounds, was th eeldest son of Mr and Mrs Smee, of 22, Trafalgar Street, St. Albans, Christchurch. He enlisted in the 1/rn Reinforcements. He was born at West Dulwich, England, and spent his twenty-first birthday at the front. He came on to New Zealand when fifteen years of age. After a stay at Hokitika ho went to Hari Hari, where he was ongaged in dairy farming. A younger brother lias boon at th© front* since July last.

A Christchurch paper'says: — Lieut. Geo. T. Weston (wounded) is a wellknown solicitor of Christchurch. Ho is 41 years, of age, and was born in Hokitika, being educated at Christ’s College and! Canterbury College, wheie ho gained the degrees of iB. A., and Bachelor of Laws. He was admitted to tho Bar on April 18th, 1898. Lieut. Weston is th o third son of the late Mr T. S. Weston, a. former District Court Judge, and for some time he was a lecturer on law and jurisprudence at Canterbury College, and.on his resignation accepted a seat on the Board, of Governors. He went into camp with the 13th Reinforcements in February, 1916, and loft tho Dominion as an officer with the 19tli Reinforcements. Ho is a well-known cricketer, and represented- Canterbury in 1902.
