NAPIER, June 13.
The rain has almost ceased though iij i 8 rtflill threaltening. To-moihow railwnymon "ill attempt to sandbag the permanent way between Napier and Hastings and if the conditions aro -suitable trains may run on Friday. A change of wind has had tho effect 01 lowering the flood considerably, but the water is still high. A southern mail was received from Hastings today per‘motor lorry and boat. The rainfall since Sunday is 10.3
inches. . News from tho country districts is still very difficult to get. In some parts the stock losses were light ns waifnlng was given, hub in others many thousands of sheep have been drowned. It will he days before details aro available.
Altogether over TOO persons were rescued by boats within a radius of 15 miles from Napier. Some of t' ships’ boats are still engaged in the work. Tliore are rumours of casualties, hut nothing has been reporvett to the police vet. Three farm workers in' the iCresterliope district have not been traced.
