The Board met on Thursday last at Christchurch, those present including Messrs J. Grimmoud and H. Bignell, West Coast members. The following business affecting Westland was dealt with :—•
Inspector Valentine recommended that the school atWataroa be shifted to a. more central site.— Received. That the Comity Council be asked if it will give a site, and the School Committee requested to obtain price fpr removal of the school budding. If satisfaciory arrangements can be made the school be shifted as recommended bv the Inspector. Mr Grimmond’s report on work arranged for by him at Kanieri, Ruatapn and Waitaha schools was approved. As the Department had written declining to make a grant for the erection of a residence at Waitaha. it,.was decided not to proceed with the work until the matter is brought before the Minister again by Air Grimmoud on his visit to Wellington. Resol ed that the chimney at Bruce Bay school to be attended to by Chairman of Committee. The Foreman i 1 to have wood shed at Stafford repaired, and also attend to repairs at Araliura Road and Koiterangi. A letter was received from Mr Tomasi of Westbrook. to tlio effect tbat, llie residents were unable to guarantee teacher's salary. It was regretted that a sum in excess of the 01 dinarv .£0 capitation was no,- available.
Letters were received from Mr C. Denniston asking tlie Board to contiuuf tins school as an aided one, as ho had five children going to school who, if A watnnft were closed would have to be sent five miles by train. Miss M. Hogan. (Swede’s Mill) wrote expressing her willingness tb ta.\o charge of this school at usual salary paid in such,.cases. Tt was agreed to continue the school as an aided

It was represented to the Committee that the present . system must be given a reasonable trial. I Agnevv, Taipo, for a transfer was re--3 ferred to the Inspector. 1 As only two applications had been 1 received for the position of Assistant 1 Agricultural instructor, and neither applicant was considered satisfactory, _ it'was decided to make no appointr ment at present, but allow Air J. G. 3 Ellis to continue in tlio position * temporarily. Air Grimmond was authorised to arrange for repairs to residence at, Araliura. It was resolved to have the school at Callaghans painted. It.was resolved that Air Grimmond ■ arrange for repairs to fences and chimneys at South Beach school and the Foreman attend to repairs and gravel at: Hokitika and report on foundations of western porch. It was resolved to have necessary fencing erected at Ruatapu school. The following Westland districts failed to elect School Committees Arixhnra Road, Awatuna, Jacksons, Koiterangi, Kumara Junction, Maudnui, Okarito, Otira and Westbrook. It was resolved that the Board desires to publicly state that it will in every manner it can assist everyone of its employees to serve the .Dominion and Empire in the present struggle, and that the Board will not apply for exemption for Air O’Flynu
