Com pany and the Union Sttamship Com- ' pany for fusion of interests. Tho arrangement provides for the P. and 0. Company issuing to tho shareholders of the Union Company ius ux their-deferred stock, and'paying 30s in cash for each Union Company’s oidinany share. At the present _ market price of P. and O. stoCk this WUJI amount to something like over 60s for each Union Company’s share, while the return per share will bo considerably improved. The Union Company shareholders have been circularised for a reply before 6th June. LONDON, May 30. Union Stoamship shares rose •i£kfcteen ■ pence on renewed absorption rumours. Red Cross Fund WELLINGTON, May 31.—A rec*n» Gazette notifies that the Minister of Internal Affairs has approved of tho fund established by the New' Zealand branch of the British Red Cross Society and Order of St John. The Minister’s formal approval was necessary under the War Contributions Validation Act, 1914. Parliament Meets. Wellington, June 1 Parliament meets on June 28th. It ia expected that war legis’ation will occupy mo?t of the session. A Hunger Striker. Christ church, June 1 A young man, Owen Francis McKee, who was arrested for failing to at--, tend his military medical examination, has been released. McKee was to have been tried by a court martial tomorrow, but be went on a hunger strike. A doctor interviewed him last evening, and the outcome is bis release.
