Sir Douglas Haig reports :-r----“Our machine-gun fire drove ott a raid in the neighbourhood of Armentieres. , . ■, “Our aerial activity lias increased. On Wednesday H German machines were brought down, and three of ours are missing.” LONDON, May 20. Sir Douglas Haig reports: We heavily repulsed a raid north-east-of Arleux. We captured a further portion ot the enemy front trench system southeast of Loos. We successfully raided southward of Armentieres and westward of Messines. The High Commissioner reports London May 26th. at 3.20. p.m.:-» Sir Douglas Haig reports:—“Normwards of the Gouzeacourt and eastwards of Aremntieres last night hostile raiders were repulsed.” “To the right of the ' Scarps uur position was slightly improved during the night-.” Between Orouiselles and the Scarpe hostile artillerying has increased.” LONDON, May 25. Sir Douglas Haig reports: —“Reciprocal artillerying was active particularly on the left bank of the . Scarpe and ini the neighhourliiod of Loos.” There was much air fighting on Thursday in which twelve German machines were brought down and six of ours are missing.”,.
German Report. LONDON, May 26. German official:—We drove back English advances in the Wytlichaefe sector, and north-east of Armentieres. The (English penetrated the first line near Loos, hut our counter-thrust drove them out. English advances north-west of Bullecourt failed. French attacks northward of Craonelles and westwards of Cabsiypontavert road broke down. The enemy lost ten. aeroplanes yesterday.
In America. WASHINGTON, May 25. The Gregory Espionage Bill has been adopted at the House and Senate conference. The censorship clause has been modified in order to apply oniy to news of military value to the enemy.
The Spy System. WASHINGTON, May 26. [Rear-Admiral Sims has reported Germany knew of the departure of the United States Fleet of destroyers to co-operate with the British some weeks ahead and consequently the British port of arrival was mined by German submarines. PARIS, May 25. The “Matin” reports that Talaafc Bey, during a recent visit to Vienna, deposited the archives of the Committee of Union, and Progress, and also n large paid of his personal fortune in an Austrian bank.
Paper in Trouble. LONDON, May 12. The “British Australian” and Mr. Chomley, the editor, were to-day prosecuted separately under the Defence of the Realm Act for publishing letters prejudicial to discipline and accusing the Australian military police of skulking in London and dodging duty. The prosecution said the polioe had all been wounded or invalided on active service, and had earned commendation. The defendant expressed regret and apologised. He said that he wa's now satisfied that the letters had been grossly exaggerated. Mr. Chomley was fined £SO, with £2O costs. Military Honors. . DUNEDIN, May 26 Sjr James Allen ha s received advice that the following New Zealanders have received additional military honors and an extra bar to the Military Medal:—2/1362 Kennedy. Military Medals to 3/410 Hawke, ond 11/1410 Bliss. An Appeal.. CHRISTCHURCH, May 26. Dr. Alan Anderson to-day appealed to the Canterbury Military Service Board for exemption. He stated that he had already served a year with the Imperial Forces, in the Army Medioal Corps. He was now in practice at Christchurch.. The appeal was adjourned sine die.
