Motor Car Accident
Napier, May 28 A oar owned by Peter Smith collided with the hand rail of a bridge near Petane last ; nigbt. Mr and Mrs Mooar and child, and also a man named Wilkinson and two others were thrown out. The child was - drowned but the body was not recovered. Wilkinson, minor, received injuries to a leg. Mrs Mooar was also thrown into the river, but was rescued. Mooar, with his wife and youngest child, were taken to the hospital. The rear part of the car struck a wing of the bridge when the oar was entering.
Wharf Labourer's Lapse-
Timaru, May 23
Wm Clausen, wharf labourer, was sentenced tothrea months’ imprisonment for obtaining £lO 10/ from, various business people by lalse pretences. Towards the end’of last year a fellow workmen was injured and Clausen went round collecting money to assist him. After getting over £lO he cleared out. He returned last week and was arrested. He pleaded guilty.and said that he went out in good faith but went to the races and «pent the money.
UNLOADING COAL
a New Scheme Favored
Wellington, May 23 The Harbor Board engineer reported to-day that a trial had been made of the Prieetman grab backet for discharging coal. Ha stated that with the grab fixed to the railway wharf cranes, with one man in the crane and a hatohman ehould, without difficulty, discharge two hundred tons in an eight-hour shift. Working with buckets off the sbip's winches and tram ming ashore, at present a gang of nine men could not put out more than one hundred tons in a day of eight hours. The grabs would not ba able to load the carts directly, but it would be possible to dump the coal into bins and to shoot it into the carts. He ihonght that this would lessen the cost of discharging and obviate in future the difficulty of obtaining suitable labor. The Board decided to order some Prieetman grabs.
A Satisfactory Position, Wellington, May 23 The chairman of the Harbour Board remarked to-day that though there had been a decrease of business the board had been able to pay its way, and there had been no inorease in wharf charges during the last six months. The chairman reported that the Marine Department had notified that the (Government could not see its way to make an alteration in the exieting arranaeiaeDtiJ regarding the payment t)f harbour dues on transports and ships carrying Government oargo. He explained that the existing arrangement was for the payment of proportionate dues on a basis of freight earning cargo to the cargo carrying oapaoitf of the ship.
