Geraiafn Naval Official. —German light fbrees in Hoof Jen on May 10th. lighted, at 5.40 in the morning, eastward of the Nordliinder Lightship, tihrce small modern English cruisers and four destroyers. An engagement developed in the direction of the Flemish coast and continued 'to Thornton Bank, where the enemy were held back by our artillery fire, which caused an explosion on an enemy destroyer, which sank. We advanced on the enemy, who full-speeded towards distant cruisers, the enemy disappearing northwards. We suffered neither damage nor lost. The British Admiralty assert that the facts, published on the- 10th May, are unaltered % the German attempt at distortion. A Confirenco AMSTERDAM, May 14. N The “Daily Telegraph’s Rotterdam correspondent says that apart from the damage to German ships and defences the increasingly frequent British aerial and naval bombardments are hamper- ■ ing the enemy in the use of their bases at Ostond and Zeebrugge. McVilly assistant General Manager of Railways appe'areu >« support of appeals' for exemption of 397 rail way men. Ho said that so far 826 men had been drawn and 569 appears lodged. The Department could release ,150 men within a fortnight. TJic-.se men have been drawn from 569 by a, departmental ballot. More would be released gradually as the, effect of the cut services was experienced. Already 5452 men had been released from the Railways to go on active service. Mr. McVilly gave his assurance that no member of the Second Division of the Expeditionary Fore© would be expected to 'go on active Service until all fit single men had gone. The appeals were adjourned for four weeks. A Strike. LONDON. May 13.
