In view of the reported shortage in the police, ex-Constable Bennett reoently volunteered for local service in the force during the cnrrenoy of the war. His patriotic offer has been accepted by the authorities, and he will don the blue and take up his duties again, commencing on Monday next. It will be pleasing to see the familiar figure once more on active service. Shark skin is receiving attention as a subs'itute for leather. It has been in limited demand for some years past as a covering far various articles. Acceptable leather from shark skins has been made in several forebm countries, and there is a sparer tly no reason why it should not be converted by the tanners into servleeab'e leather. The skin of sharks is very tough, and durable, and some of tlum have a beautiful surface pattern, which remains after' tanning. Speaking before the Cobden School Committee of the good done by physical culture, the head master (Mr Barrett) mentioned that of twenty scholars possessed last year of minor defects suob as curvature cf the spine, round shoulders, pigeon chest, etc., bat one this year failed to show the full benefit of the corrective exercises. Miss Dunn, the teacher who was responsible for oarrying out the physical drill, deserves every credit for the improvement manifested. The Returned Soldiers will „ inaugurate their local association, by a grand ball to be held next Thursday. The committee are working bard to make the function a success, and no 'doubt in . this effort they will have fall support from the public. A start was made to-day to prepare the Drill Shed for the ball, special attention being devoted to the floor. The ladies of the Over-seas Club will haAe charge of the refreshment department, and will be glad of all assistance in the way of gifts. The Over-seas orchestra, Mrs Houston, Mr Lawn, and others are offering to help with the music, so that this important part of the night’s enjoyment will be in most capable hands. A good sale of tickets is reported from the country district*, and there, will be a large influx of visitors for what should be an exceptionally popular gathering.
