HOSPITAL MATTERS.
(Kumara Times). P' 1 • Very little surprise was evinoed yesterday when it became known that the Charitable Aid Board had decided to give the staff of the Kumara Horpital three months’ not : ce, and to convert the Hospital into an Old Man’s Home under the supervision of a Master and Matron. This has been the ambition of several members of the Board‘for years, aud would have been carried out long since but for the influence Mr Murdoch undoubtedly exercised over certain of the members. His absence from the Board on Wednesday was the occasion for a complete volte face by the said members, with the result that Mr F. Roberts and Mr Grimmond were the only champions of the looil institution, We congratulate Mr Roberts oa ihe fight be put up on his debut at the Board table. Under its extravagant management the Board has run the Hospitals iu Westland almost to a standstill. Example did not walk hand in band with precept ; whilst they preached economy they acted lavishly ; one item, especially, being the increase of the Secretary’s salary, which was accomplished the meeting following that at which looal committees were advised to practise economy. The Kumara Committee can always look baek with pride to the time when they managed the institution, and handed it over to the Board with a credit balance. Since then they have been mere figure head?'—a fifth wheel to the coach, as it were.
