Quarterly Meeting Tuesday, May 1 Tbe qusrterly meeting of ths Chamber was h;l4 at 745 p.m. Present —Messrs J. Park (chair), B. Wild, W. Wilson, A. H, Richards,-J. J. Mclntosh, G. R. Stewart, T. Brook, M. Houston, G. Chapman, C. J, Nightingale and D. J. Evans. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed anti outward correspondence read and epproved. INWARD correspondence. From W. Butler apologising for absence and promising article.-—Re-ceived. From Under-Secretary of Lands, Wellington, etatmg the acquisition of land for returned soldiers is stiff under consideration. —Received.' Mr Evans moved that the Department be asked to send an officer down to inspect suitable land iu Westland. Seconded by Capt Richards and carried.
From A, E, MoGregor, Chief Postmaster re metallic circuit, find stating enquiries were-being made. —Received.
From Telegraph Engineer, Christchurch, in reference to telephone office at Ferguson’s, Little WaDganni, and statiog it was regrottsd that another office could not ba opened owing to the present line being overloaded at present.— It was resolvt ed to again write to ‘he Department asking that a special line be put up between Hari Han and Fergusons which would prove a great boon to travellers in flood time. From District Traffic Manager, Greymoutb, statiog so far be had no knowledge of what tbe red notions were to be on tbe Westland train strvice. — Received.
From Union S S. Coy, stating that when normal conditions prevailed an endeavor would be made to again make the connection with the Wo3t Coast serviae and the ferry baat at Lyttelton.—Received. After discussion it was resolved to defer further
action meanwhile. From Sir James Allen in oonaeotioa with visit to Hokitika.—Riceived. As a result of the telegram a public meeting was held in the Town Hall. From Sam 9, iu couaection with the settlement of tbe strike.—Received. After discussion it was resolved to reply.
F/om Navy Lsague, Christchurch, stating over 200 Chambers of Commerce in England had passed a resolution, urging that Germany should be made to replace every ship sunk.— Received. It was resolved to endorse the proposal. From Southern Pacific Trading Coy, Yokohama, in reference to opening up trade relatione, —Received. An account was passed for payment.
Mr W. Wilaon r.a.l interesting articles by the late Mr Charles Douglas on the “ Kiwi ” and “ Rad Bill.” The meeting olosed at 9.15 p.m.
