CURTAILING SERVICES,

A Serious Position. Wellington, April 23 Farther local inquiries show the position is serious owing to the coal strike. Stocks are exhausted and the present cold snap is causing rather a heavier strain on householders’ supplies. The ferry eervioes have been reduced and suburbanites dependent on trains bad an unpleasant surprise yesterday, discovering that no cars were running all day, beyond the very attenuated service between the city and Newtown, and through to tho other side of Kilbivoie tunnel. Government offices opened at 8.30 this morning and close at 4,30, in otder to save lighting. The Mayor is appalling fo business people to »o modify their hours as to redace the demands on electricity for lights and power and to conserve the dwindling coal slocks as long as possible. Waimate Resolutions. Waimate, April 21 At a large meeting of business men called by the Mayor to-day, it was resolved to insist on the Postmaster General giving a daily mail service, as tbe express trains pass Studholme Junction daily. The Chairman of tbe Gas Company warned the community that only a few weeks’ coal was in slock, therefore they should assist by economising and daylight saving wherever possible.

Tbe meeting also resolved to hold the weakly half-holiday this week on Wednesday so as to celebrate Auzac Day.
