Nationa! War Funds Council Monday, April 2. The Board met at the County Chambers at 3 o’clock. Present— Mr J, Grirmnond (chair), Messrs Murdoch, Brook, Clifton, NOl man, Andrewea and Evans. Affaire Dvpartroant forwarding att appeal on behalf --of Servo*.— R.csived From J. W. Kionibargh notifying visit on behalf of the War Tunas Council.—Received. It WiS reported that Mr Kiuniburgh had met the local executive, and discussed various matters of administration. As already explained the scheme with the National Cooncil was working satisfactorily. The Federated Patriotic Advisory Board, forwarded particulars of the last meeting at Wellington and notified decisions of tb9 War Pens : ous Board. —Received. Ia respect to a pension discontinued at Ross it was resolved to make further enquiry. The Board advised in respect to a graut of £2 18/ for a soldier’s kit destroyed.—Received. The Secretary reported this amount had not been paid, being now some weeks overdue. It was stated a farther telegram had been sent that day, and it was resolved to await reply. The Board supplied a copy of a re-

port made by Mr W. Powdrell on the question of placing soldiers on the land, particularly as far as it concerns dairy farms.—Rsceived and resolved to have the report published. In a discussion on the matter the suggestion was made that Government Bbonld authorise a special preference to soldiers in all land ballots. Mi Brook explamed that this was now beiDg generally done in that most land ballots were exclusively for returned discharged soldier?. It was also elicited that in such ballots parents or agents of soldiers at the front could apply if accredited to the satisfaction of Land Boards. It was thought this provision should be koown more widely, Internal Affairs Department forwarded Gazette notices under the War Regulations Act.—Received. The Army Pay Department acknowledged claim on joay for a soldier on leave. —Received. The Discharged Soldiers Department enquired in respeco to a returned man. —Received, and reply to be sent that permanent employment had been secured in the Railway Department. The Officer in Charge of War Expenses wrote in respect to a deceased soldier’s estate placed in the hands of the Public Trustee.—Received and beneficiary notified. A returned Westland soldier residing at Greymouth applied for a small grant.—Received. A temporary grant of £Q was made, The Greymouth Association recommended assistance for a Westland enlisted returned soldier who wished to return to his parents in TasmFinis). —

Received. A grant to cover the through fare was approved. Au application recommended bj the Canterbury Patriotic Society on behalf of the wife and ohild, of a Westland soldier at the front was considered, and 7/ per week for three months was granted, A similar local application for a wife and child was made, and 7/ per week fcr one month was granted. The oase of a returned discharged soldier refused a military pension was brought up, and the action in writing the Minister of Pensions for a further investigation of the case was approved, it being pointed out that the decision of the Pension Board did not coincide with the soldier’s clean and explicit cause for discharge. The meeting then concluded.
