Perjury Therefrom.
HAMILTON, March 19 The hearing of the perjury charges against the natives who gave evidence at the iiua trial in Auckland, was opened in the Supreme Court this afternoon before Air. Justice Hosking; Air. Mays, appeared for the Crown. .Benjamin Biddle, represented by Air. Hopkins, was brought up for sentence having pleaded guilty to w charge of committing perjury by swearing that the man who fired first shot on 2nd April at Alaungapohatu was Constable Skinner. Senr. Sergeant Cassels in evidence as' probation officer said the accused made a statement to him to the effect that he had been induced to commit perjury by a' solicitor appearing in the case.
Mr. Mays pointed out that the accused, who is a son in-law of Rua, had given the Crown valuable information, and there, was no doubt thatr the mana of Rua was over them all, and he was counted as a God by the Maoris'. His honor in sentencing prisoner'said be would take all these considerations into account, and that lie had made a clean breast of the whole matter. Perjury, however, was a serious' crime, and hard to detect in many cases. The prisoner would he sentenced to nine months -imprisonment with hard labour.
