The death took place at Gisborne on Thursday of Mrs MacDonald, mother of the H6n W. D. 8, MacDonald, aged 83 years.

On the bowling green on Saturday afternoon the holders of the Ballinger Buckles, Messrs Thompson. .T. Ross, visited the Westland Hospital yesterday and played a choice musical programme. A large number of visitors were present, and spoke in loud, terms of the band’s splendid performance. During the afternoon the members were enItertainod by the matron and staff to afternoon tea, which was very much appreciated. Mr F. McGregor on behalf of the Board and staff, thaniceci the band for their musical treat, a na issued a hearty invitation to the band to pay another visit at anl early date. Mr McGregor was high in his praise of the efforts of the band in catering for the enjoyment of those who were in ill health, feeling sure by the appearance of the patients that one and all had thoroughly enjoyed tho hand’s visit. Mr Chas. Ross briefly replied on behalf of the hand, and thanked the Matron and staff for their dainty refreshments, and Mr McGregor for his kindly references (towards tlieir effort.

- Two Westland soldiers—Graham and .Wells —returned from the fields of France on Saturday night. There was a large gathering of the public to receive them, and at the call of the Deputy Mayor (Mr Goulson) hearty cheers were givon. After a round of handshaking the men were escorted to the Soldiers’ Club at the Overseas Rooms, where ffiey, with their relatives were regaled -with supper. Mr Coulson, on behalf of the town and district extended a cordial welcome home, and expressed the pleasure felt at seeing them safely back. Mr Robt. Wells replied on tiehalf of his brother and. Graham, both of whom look very well. Graham, who was badly wounded is stil* suffering from an injured arm, and will have to go into hospital for further treatment. Wells was wounded twice, but now seems almost quite recovered. Both men exp-ess a desire.to return to the froDt as soon as they are fit again.

Tiie wedding took place last week at Wesley Church. Reefton, when Mr John Henry Lawn, third son of Mr and Mrs James Lawn, of Black’s Point, was united in holy matrimony to Miss Amelia Christina Mabel Laird, of Reefton. Mr Lawn is a returned Anzac, and saw service in Egypt, Gallipoli, and also in France, and was invalided home last year.

At a meeting of the Kumara Hospitil Committee on Thursday evening, the Surgeon-Superintendent (Dr ’Fleming) reported: —Patients in hospital Ist February, 27; admitted during February, 3 ; died, 0; remaining on 28th February, 30/ —Received. Mr McG'.one reported that all was working smoothly at ihahospital. The Secretary reported receipts for the month amounting to £72 15/.
