“His Excellency the Governor lias been pleased to re-appoint Mr. Bernard Ward as a member of the Westland Land Board as from 4th March 1917.” So reads a notice in the “Gazette.”
Major W. C. Finnis, General Staff Officer for the Canterbury Military District, has been offered and accepted a position in the Expeditionary Forces, and before taking up his duties, accompanied by Mrs Finnis, are at present on a visit to Franz Josef Glacier.
On the Bowling green last evening, further games for the singles championship were played. In a further game to decide Section A first. round tie, Stewart beat Benjamin by 29 to 11. The unfinished game between Stewart and Anderson will now decide the sectional winner. In the second round Stevenson defeated Thompson bv 20 to 13.
It is with regret that wo recurd the death of Mr Robert Douglas, sou of Mr John Douglas of Waitaha, which took place yesterday evening at West’and Hospital. The young man, who was a native of Woodstock was only 20 years of age. General sympathy will bo felt for the bereaved parents and relatives in the loss sustained.
Two returned so'diers, Privates Graham (Kokatahi) and Wells (Woodstock) are expected to return here tomorrow evening. No doubt they will be accorded a hearty welcome home. The Overseas Club has invited the returner men to supper ou arrival, when the Deputy Mayer will be asked to accord the men an official welcome. The Committee of the Overseas Club met last evening, Mr L. F. de Berry presiding. It was resolved to extend the time for applications for a manager c-f the Club rooms till Wednesday, when the Committee meets again. The question oE the celebration of Aazae Day will also be gone into at that meeting. Lieut W, E. Johnstone, accompanied by bis wife are at present visiting Jiokitika. Lieut Johnstone recently returned from France, where he saw service with the 11th Reinforcements and was returned home suffering from shell shock. Lieut Johnstone also saw sorvica in South Africa, rnd for many years, was an officer in the Ist Westland Rifles.
A quiet wedding was solemnised at Brunnerton yesterday afternoon, when Mr Alired Colin Angel, third son of Mr H. J. H, Angel of Brunnerton, was united in the holy bonds of matrimony to Miss Gertie Metcalfe, daughter of Mr Robert Metcalfe, of Dalesford, Melbourne. The pleasing ceremony was performed at the residence of the bridegroom’s sister (Mrs Paul Peillor) by the Rev Mr Reilly. The happy couple subsequently left by the evening train for north on their marrieg: tour.
There was an excellent muster of Senior Cadets on parade last evening under Lieut Parktull, Sergt Major Adkins D.0.M., being also presen*. Several members of the Non Coma. Class made their first appearance before the company and carried out in detail various work in a very creditable manner. It was annouuced that the half-day parade called this month woald be cancelled. The roll was then called and the parade dismissed.

Mr 1, Brown, who has been visiting Rotorua for some months, suffering from severe rheumatism, returned homo this morning, showing considerable improvement to his former condition. His many friends trust that the progress will continue satisfactorily. The “ Timaru Herald ” states that an angler fishing in the Waitaki last week end caught ten quinnat salmon, weighing from 91b to 181 b. Another angler caught one weighing 2 fib. Fishing near the mou'h of the' Rangitata last week, Mr W. JPCallum landed three beautiful quinnat salmon, ranging trom 191 b to 231 b.
