The polling for the Bay bye-election caused by the death of Hon R. McNab, is taking place today.

The star film was “ The Green Swamp " & story of a wife’s jea’onsy in which the plot was considerably overdrawn, though the acting and staging was of a very fiuo standard.
Further particulars of the accident to Mr Jas Rathbone at Reefton on Sunday, show that he was driving the trotter Voter in a sulky when, without any warning, the horse iet fly with both hind legs, striking Mr Rathbone on the jaw, and knockiog him completely out of his sulky, in the fall from which he sustained a fractured thigh. In addition to that injury, he had an artery severed in the jaw, and this necessitated three stitches being put in his face. He was taken homo, and later the leg was sot. Mr Rathoono has not had the best of health for some considerable time past, having suffered from acute rheumatism, with the result that his lower extremities have become crippled, and now this latest aecident will Jay him up for some time.

An incipient fi-e occurred at tin Kumara Dairv Factory yesterday morning, It appears that a cinder from the chimney alighted on an old roof ladder on the roof and set it afue. The heat of the iron caught the woodwork underneath, but the manager (Mr Wallace) soon put it out by means of a bucket of water.
On the bowung green yesterday afternoon a rink of Greymouth visitor consisting of Messrs FleLher (2), Sargert and Blackwood (skip) played a local four consisting of Boyd, Thompson, Braddon and Stewart (skip), and after an enjoyable game the visitors proved vietonans by three points. In tbe evening a game of the final round of the singles championship was played between Stevenson and J, H. Wilson, the former proving the victor by 20 to 17.
The death took place on Sunday even, ing at Reefton Hospital of Mrs Lily Bonewife of the late William Bone, whose death occurred just seven weeks previously. The deceased lady had been in indifferent health for some time past, and an operation was deemed necessary, although there was not a great deal of hope held out of her ultimate recovery, The operation was performed some days ago, and, though she rallied and appeared to be doing well, it was only temporary, and she passed away. Tbe deceased leaves a family of eight ohilJren five daughters and three sona—the e'dest of whom is just verging upon manhood.

The pickpocket is out again in the practice of his nefarious operations, this time with perhaps more violence in his methods than hitherto. Last Sunday a well-known Wellington resident, while returning from a day’s outing at Day’s Bay, was relieved of a small roll of notes. There was a big crush and it is believed that the thief was busy in the crowd. The gentleman in question felt a tug at his coat tails, but paid no attention to it until later when he found he had been robbed. The notes were in a purse attached to a chain and ithe receptacle was in the hip pocket. The purse had been snipped off the chain, so it is evident that particularly smart experts are at work.
