“Carmen” To-Night
A capital programme is arranged for to-night headed by a piotnriaation of the famous opera " Carmen.” The story of the play is so well known as to require only tbe barest outline, Carmen, the beautiful Spanish gipsy, spirit of coquetry incarnate, lives bat to conquer the hearts of men. Don Jose, a young officer of ihe Spanish army, falls a victim to her dangerous fascinations. At her behest he foreakea bis duty, and at last, driven by insane jealousy, he commits a murder for her sake. Ha flees from justice and takes refuge with a band of outlaws in the mountains. Having accomplished his ruin, the heartless Carmen turns to fresh conquests. The handsome Lucas, foremost Toreador of Spain, takes her fancy, and she seta about bis subjugation. She has reckoned without Jose, however. Instead of taking his dismissal calmly the disgraced officer lies in wait for his false love and in a manner typically Spanish wreaks terrible vengeance. Additional spectacular effects aro provided by the toreador fight and of a horse leaping over a 400 feet high cliff.
