bandsman e. groufsky.
A very pleasant and successful function took place in fit. Mary’s Club - Rooms on Monday evening last, when . the members of ithe local band and their friends met to farewell Mr E. Groutsuy one of their solo cornet players who is shortly leaving for the training camp. Ihe Mayor (Mr G. Perry) occupied the chair. The presentation, which ) consisted of an illuminated dial wristlet ; watch, was made by the Mayor, who, . in the course of his speech, referred to Mr. Groufsky’s long connection with tho [ band, and tho enthusiasm he displayed in its welfare. On behalf of his friends the Mayor wished him a pleasant journey and a safe return to Hokitika, whore in happier times he could recount- his experiences to his friends. Messrs C. Ross (Conductor), <Lf. Dwan (Hon. Sec.), G. Wormington (St. Mary’s Club), addded their meed of appcciation; all the speakers expressing the hope that their guest would come safely through the trying ordeai. iJIr F. <3roufsky responded on behalf of his brother and thanked the members of -the Band for the considerate recognition they had shown him. MR. J. GROUFSKY. (Later in the evening another presentation was made ito Mr J. Goufsky, who is also going into camp. The presentation, which consisted of a complete shaving outfit, was the gift of Mr and Mrs T. Stopforth and family. The Mayor in his speech commented on the long and faithful service renucred by the recipient to hi s employer, and he said the Stopforth family wished to show in a tangible manner their appirelation of an‘employee who had carried out his duties conscientiously. The Mayor concluded his speech by wishing Mr J. Groufsky,.a safe return to home ana friends. After Mr Groufsky had acknowledged the kndly references made by me Mayor and the handsome gift of the donors, a short euchre tournament was held, tho pizes for which were on by Mosdanies Allardyce and E'. Groufsky, Messrs A. E. Stapleton and R. Fraser. A choice repast was then partaken of by the largo assemblage present. The room was then cleared for dancing, the music for which was supplied by Miss Williams, Messrs C. Ross and A. Lawn. During the evening musical items were rendered by Messrs Ilosking and Blackmore. With the singing of Auld Lang Syne and the National Anthem a pleasant function terminated.
