ANTARCTIC SERVICE.
The Price Paid.
An important business transaction took place at the Government shipping office yesterday morning, the parties to the eam6 being Sir Ernest Shackleton and the purser of thß Antarctic exploring ship Aurora. The business was the handing over to Sir Ernest; in a lump sum, of his total earnings for the last seven weeks, during whioh time he acted as “supernumerary officer” of the ship. With due formality the purser handed to tbe knight of the icefields tbe sum of one shilling and tenpence. Sir Ernest did not appear the least bit surprised at the amount of his earnings, nor did he threaten Arbitration Court proceedings, bat gravely counted and pocketed the money and signed ‘Ernest Shackleton ” to the receipt for the seven weeks’ wages due The transaction was not carried out au a joke, but was the result of a formal aud neoessary contract entered into by Sir Ernest over two montfca ago, when the Aurora left Port Chalmers for the Boss Sea. Sir Ernest signed on the articles as supernumerary officer—a nominal position—but, being on the articles, he had to be paid a salary. The salary was fixed at 1/ per month. The explorer declared yesterday that the 1/10 was the first money he had really earned for quite a while.
