BOSS.
(From Uur 0 vu Correspondent.) An effort was made recently to resuscitate the almost defunct Swimming Ciub, with the result that a little interest has been shown by several sporting citizens who are endeavoring to get one or two competitors ready for the West Coast, Championship for scholars under 14 years which takes place at Greymouth on Wednesday next. There are likely to be two competitors for the 100 and 400yds events go from here. A further inducement to the school children is that the sum of three pounds was voted by tbe Club for Bwim-'" 1 ""- events at Lake Mahinapu* od F it. the occasion being the an i . ' excursion. 1 j .. contemplated getting a team of boys in training for the life saviug competition wbioh was pro-
n.o eJ some time ago by your “mod enterprising ci iz n.” We woulc much lilre the coopers ion of tht parents of our children. They con give considerable assistance by encouraging their children tj nominate and enter for these variau t events, so there is no actual cost or expense to them in having the boys ena guis taught these useful and beneficial exercises. The local club is ready aod •willing to foster the sport, by every legitimate means they can. They cannot succeed unless the parents will second their efforts in the manner suggested above. A competition of a more general nature takes place in the Totaia H-ll next Wednesday in the hit. Paul s Church annual fljwer, vegetable and fruit display. There are to be special prizis giveu this year for ltcal grown vegetables and fruit. Seeirg the highly favourable season we have had, there is certain to be numerous entries in the two 1 atter classee. The gardens and orchards of the district never looked belter, nor yielded mere prolific ctops, which augurs well for the forthcoming show.
Another attempt is to be made at the end of the month to get a dairy factory started in R;>9B. The previous meetings held appeared'to lack that most esaentiel factor, *‘co operation.” Surely the ruling prices for butter and cheese should be some inducement iu galvanising oar landowners into botion. The trouble is each oae wants the other fellow to take on tbe m>lkiog and get ihe factory s arted. Then they will join in, but why Dot try the simple expedient of everyone aoiog his bit. Su ely the settlers of tbe Tot ira district are as well able as say Arahura district, to moke this industry go, aod see what pulling together has done in that district. The sum of £I,OOO for one month’s milk is no mean achievement, when yoa remember only a few years ago they opened their factory with the milk of 186 cows on the fir3t day. More power to their arms, may they soon double their record moath, They deserve a ) .heir success, for by their coflecLve efforts alone, have they achieved their envi* able position.
