The Consolidated Goldfields report j that the crushing returcs for the month of January were as follows, Pirgress, Ciushed 1500 tors, value £1691 ; wcrkirg expenses* £1685 ; capital, £lO ; development* £4lO. 7 Black water. — Crushed 226 L tors, } value £1523 ; working, expenses, £3085 ; capital, £l2B ; develrpment, ’ £458. Wealth—Crushed 958 tons, value £1533 ; working expense?, £1735, development, £335. The low tonnage in all mines was due to the shortage of labour during the first half of the month. Supreme Court. Timaru, Feb 7 At the Supreme Court, Albert Hewett and Henry Mackle wore found not guilty of assault. Daniel Coauell for indecent assault of a girl under 16, at Pleasant Point, the Jury found guilty, but strongly requested the indulgence) of the Court on account of the character of tbe aot and the belief of tbe Jury that the aot was not preme J itated, but the result of a sudden temptation and that accused desisted from further impropriety. In addition the report of the j police probation officer was favourable, stating the accused was a quiet j hard working respectable farmer and had been called up to camp. The Judge said he was not bound to j make a scapegoat and exclude the benefits of the Probation Act.
