The deaths numbered 237 of which 42 were children under five years, and 103 persons of sixty-fivo years and over. Carterton, Jan 23 A discharged soldier named Charles Marshall Dix, of A Company Twenty-record Reinforcement" 1 , was found in Carrington Park on Sunday with his throat cut. He was removed to the Greytown Hospital, where he died at 8.30 o'clock last nigh*. Ha had bean discharged from camp on January 18, medically unfit.. Ho was a single man, aged twenty-eight. George Marven was sentenced at the Magistrate’s Court t;-day to one month’s imprisonment for a seditious utterance, Gisborne, Jan 24 As the result of a police raid to-day sis well known residents wero arrested on charges under the Gaming Ac*. They were released on bail of £IOO each in three major cases, and £5 each in the other three esses. Police Promotions. Wellington, Jan 20 The following police promotions and transfers are announced : Sub-luspector Marsack, of Palmerston North, to be Inspector at Wellington, Senior-Sergeant Dew, of Mount Cook, to bo Sub-Inspector at Lambton Quay, Sab-Inspector M’Kinnon, of Lambton Quay, transferred to Palmerston North. 'Sergeant Green, of Thames, to be Sanior-Sergoant at Mount Cook, Wellington. Inspector Wilson, of Wanganui, retires with the honorary rank of Superintendent and is succeeded by Inspector Hendry, of Wellington. Inspector Sheaban, of Auckland, is transferred to Invercargill and succeeded at Auckland by Sub-Inspector Fouby, of New Plymouth, who is promoted to Inspector. Sub-Inspeotor M’llveney, of Auckland is transferred to New Plymouth, .Senior-Sergeant Matheson, of Cbristphurch, is promoted to be Sob-Inspec-tor, and Senior-Sergeant Woblmann of Waihi has been transferred to Christchurch. Senior-Sergeant Wohlinann will bo replaced by Sergeant Grady, promoted to the rank of Senior Sergeant. Sergeant Gaffney, statistics clerk at Lambton, Wellington, is promoted to be Senior-Sergeant.
