RABBITS IN NEW ZELAND.
Action by Government
Tho following telegram has been sent to Hon W. D. S. MacDonald, Minister of Agriculture, by Mr M. G Ell, M.P.
“ A report has appeared in tho cable messages from England that in order to help the food supply tho Imperial Government is taking over till frozen rabbits afloat. Beyond the manhood sacrifice, which the fine men from onr shores have made, this country has doue nothing, while our producers have demanded high and higher prices. I would suggest, in order to induce the more Bjstemrtic trapping of rabbits, that the Government should offer a good price for rabbits trapped and brought to receiving stations, and that your Department cease to harry landowners to wa3te good food, which is so much needed beyond our shore?, by compelling thoss l&ndowners to lay poison for the deetraction of rabbits, Iu his reply to Mr Eil the Minister states : “J have received your wire regarding fioztn rabbit?. lam now arranging for tbe purchase of all frozen rabbits in New Zealand for the Imperial Government. I will look into your suggestion in regard to encouraging trapping.”
Mr Eli has been informed tbat for several years a considerable business has been done in trapping and freezing rabbits in Otago and Southland, but that in Canterbury the practice has been to poisoD. He stated recently that be recognised that the rabbit must bo kept down, but ha thought that, if possible, it should be done by trapping.
