Overseas Orchestra, and a full practice is to be held at the Club rooms on Tuesday next. Some new music has been secured, and it is hoped the orchestra will be able to make its debat on the 7th prox, when the 26th Reinforcements will be farewelled. An owner who had horses engaged at the recent meeting of the Westland Racing Club, has written to that body as follows “I must take the opportunity of congratulating the Club and its officials on the splendid manner in which the jubilee meeting was conducted. It is most pleasing to me, and I feel 3ure to every other sport, to see how successful your stewards were in attending to owners’ wants. Continuation is the ttrik ing feature to success.” The half-yearly meeting of the Robert Emmett branch of the H.A.C.B Society was held last evening, when the installation of officers took place. Past President Bro (L. Dwan installed tlie following officers for the ensuing term : —President, Bro. H. Williams; vicepresident, Bro. M. McGovern; Secretary. Bro P. Callan; treasurer, Bro. John Sullivan; warden, Bro. J. Cahill; guardian, Bro. W. Neads; sick visitors, Bros. Cahill and Pickering. A considerable amount of business relating to the welfare of the Lodge was transacted. tlio end of 1917. Newspapers are economising, pruning the free list and voucher copies, eliminating waste in the machine rooms, such as cutting down the centre margins to a quarter of an inch. The “ Daily Mail ” has reduced its returns to 2 per cent. The “ Telegraph " has reduced its size from 21 pages to 12 daily and 16 on Saturday, The “ Morning Post" has eight pages daily and 10 on Saturday, the “ Daily Mail" six and eight, the 11 Daily News ’’ and * Express * invariably six, while the evening papers have made between 33 and 50 per oent reductions. Fifty-two provincial papers have increased the price to I£d. London proprietors have conferred as to whether they should increase the pr'ce, maintaining the size of the advertisements, or reduce the size, restricting the advertisements. - “The Times” has al* ready increased its price to l^d. We are informed, says the Grey Argus that our respected townsman, Mr A. H, Milner, had rather a unique experience recently while trout fishing in the Tereraakau Biver. Prospecting in its tidal waters, with that most deadly lure the glow-worm, he hooked a large fish which he took to be a salmon, owing to its unusual strength and c(forts to make its escape, Howevo”, after much patience and perseverance, ho succeeded in landing his prize, in exactly one and a half hours from the time it was hooked. Mr Milner was much surprised on lind'ng his catch was a beautiful schuapper which turned out to be lSijlb in weight. This is (he first (imo we havo heard cf a schnappor taking a worm. They are, however, frequently caught on hand lines and in nets in our West Coast rivers at certain times of the year. The death took place on Ist January, 1917, at Toorak, Melbourne, of Charles Hugh Webb Bowen, in. his 82nd year. The late Mr Bowen was in the early days Clerk of Court at Westport.
