OBITUARY

Herbert Macandrew; Aetat 57. It is with extrema regret that wa announce the passing of one of onr most esteemed citizens, Dr Herbert M&oandrew, whose death took place this morning at 10.30 o’clock, after a long and painful illness borne with great fortitude. The deceased was born in Dunedin 57 years ago. He was a son of the late Hon James Macandrew, the first Superintendent of Otago and Minister of Public Works in Sir George Grey’s Government, who brought the first steamers to New Zealand. Hr Macandrew wa3 educated at Edinburgh University and then returned to NBW Zealand, where he was appointed assistant medical officer at Seacliffe Mental Hospital, Dunedin. Some 28 years ago he was appoiuted medical officer at Sea View Mental Hospital and he has resided at Hokitika ever since.

Dr Macaudrew was truly one of Nutarn’s gentlemen, and his life in Hokitika has been a most exemplary one. He was a splendid citizen, and hiß memory will be ever honored by all who had the plsa-mre of his acquaintanceship. He was cf a very kind and unassuming natare, and many is tha poor home that has had its suffering and hardship considerably relieved by many unostentatious acts of charity and attention freely given by the medici during his visits of mercy to the affiioted,

In publio life Dr Macandrew filled many positions with honor and success, Ha was a member of the Borough Council for many years, and Acting Mayor on several occasions, and it was noticeable that in most contested elections for the Council he was placed at the very top of the poll. As Chairman of Reserves ha did much good work, and mainly by his efforts Macandrew Patk was brought into being. The treaa on Cass Square were the subject of much attention, and he always did bis best to improve the general appearance of pubhc places. The Acclimatisation and Touristy Society Io?e3 a valuable member who bad filled the President’s Chair with marked success, hia work in furthering the district’d interests being always well done, For many years he was SurgeonCaptain of the Volunteer forces. In his official capacity Dr Macan. drew won hosts of friends, and the patients at the Mental Hospital loved and revered their kind pairstaking official visitor. Westland Hospital also loses one who has done much in assisting to alleviate suffering, and it was only at a rec6nt meeting of the Hospital Board that there was placed on record an appreciation of the services of Dr Macandrew, who has saved Westland Hospital hundreds of pounds by his freely given services, including the giving of anaesthetics at the institution. The deceased leaves a widow aud family of three, one son (Master “Teddy ” Macandrew)’ and two daughters (Mrs Stanley White and Miss Maiaie Macandrew.) There are also four brothers (Mr Hunter Macaudrew, Inspecting Engineer of Railways Wellington, Mr Arthur Macandrew,Government electrician at Auckland, Mr Colin Macandrew, Secretary to the Otago Education Board Donedin, and Mr Jame? Macandrew, farmer of Portobello), and three sisters, one of whom Nurse Macandrew was matron at Kumara and Greymouth hospitals and who is now in charge of a military hospital in England. The community will extend to the bereaved family very sincere condolences in their sad bereavement.
