BUSH FIRES.
Alarmist reports retched Westport ou Wednesday evening that five houses at the cutting near tha Cape were surrounds i by fire and that the inhabitants were in a bad way. A request was made that a train load of fire-fightero be sent out, Sergeant McCrori9 immediately got into touch with tha Harbor Board authorities and arranged for the despatch of the motor jigger and also an engine, and also informed the Fire Brigade, which im-
mediately rang the alarm bringing in members of the brigade. Meantime further inquiries were made and it was ascertained the conditions wore not as serious as pictured. A big fire was raging, damaging, it was reported, Gibson’s Creek bridge and the tramway in the vicinity of tha bridge, bat no buildings were seriously affected. One of the men, concerning whom most 3firiou3 reports were -iroulated, was found quietly following hia dairying pursuits. A deaso body of smoke made things appear more serious than they were. It is reported, however, that the repaira.to bridge and tramway will run into £IOO or more, bat the full extent of the da mag a was not ascertainable.
