Trilby went away with the lead, the other two being neck and neck passing the stand the first time, Biadamante hard held,’ Going out of the straight the latter chopped right across from the outside , and forced British Rose back and . when the latter came on the outside ran him out wide. It was a very bad example of riding. Trilby won by

FIRST DAY’S RESULTS.

The first day of the Grey Trotting Club’s Summer Meoting took place on Saturday. There was a large attendance, although probably not so many as on the first day in previous year--. The track was very fast and some good times were recorded. The last threw races were won by horses belonging to 'Mr 11. W. Kitchingham. In the bi.; race of the day Paul Default, a threi year old pony, after leading practically all the way, and looking an easy winne r half way down the straight went to pieces in tho last fifty yards and allowed Peony to win by a nose. There were no protests to mar the day’s proceedings and the Stipendiary Steward had an easy task, although in at least a couple of instances it did seem asif aqestion might ihayo boon asked in regard to the performance of some of the competitors. The following are the wjsults: GUINNESS HANDICAP, 11 miles, (Harness) —Rouble, scr 1; Myrtle Lea., 15secs, 2; Miss Marion, 5 secs 3. Also started —Trojan, Malabar. Harold Chimes, Jedran, Captain Mac, Florence. Won by a length, with Miss Marion two lengths further hack. Time 3.41 2-5. SUMMER HANDICAP (Saddle), 2 miles —Inquisitive, 8 secs, 1; Ardath 24 secs, 2; Valuation, 24 secs, 3. Also started —Fairy Whispers, Colonel Havelock, Tell Tale, Lauderhill, Thora, Garrett, Lady Bird, Qui'ncelyn, Capewell, Heathcote, Chimes, Educate, Generous, Woodland and Rose Tracey. Won pulling up. Also started—Sceptre, Roosevelt, Miss Wallace, Mada, Rose Drift (coupled with Bernie L), Fanny Dillon and IVon easily, a good race for second dace. -ELECTRIC HANDICAP (Saddle), 1 mile—Auriferous, 7 secs, 1; latno, 1 sec i; Little Rose, 2 secs, 3. Also started —Evelecn, Miss Marion, Mylrtlewood, Annies. Ohief, and Fairy Whispers. Won easily, lanto just beating Little Rose for second money.

Grsyaiouth, Jan 2 For the Grey Trotting Cl ib’s second day there is ideal weather. The track is dry and fast. County—Osier 1, Thora 2, Miss Rye 3. Won by two lengths. Time 5.13 1-5. Railway—Agnes Chief 1, Gladeyo 2, Lluvia d’Or 3. Peony and Rouble capsized, but the drivers escaped unhurt. Won by a head. Time 2.59 4-5. Westland Handicap—Westland Lass 1, Pyramid 2, Wee Put 3. Won by a short head. Time 2.39 3-5. Cup—Thesus 1, Sceptre 2, Chaos 3. Won by three lengths. Time 4.55.

FOOTBALL. - •LONDON, Dec. 519. At football the Army Service, team beat New Zealand by 5 to 4. It was the most brilliant exhibition since the war began and there was the keenest interest, as both, sides were hitherto unbeaten. They played seventeen on each side, which included eight internationals. Mr Massey, Sir Joseph Ward and SuT. Mackenzie and Six - James Carroll •'o present. The New Zealand team were:—Full back, Hanna; three-quarters, Meuli, O’Brien and Muir; five-eignts, Jeffs and Campbell; Half, Roberts ; For-, wards Shehan, Sellars, Hughes, Seeling, J. Campbell, West } Longford and Paul. / The Array Service included Trevavth en and Campbell. For the New Zealanders Roberts in the first half dropped a beautiful gao. The Army Service in the second spelt scored a try, which was converted The Now Zoalanders wero awarded two penalties, but Roberts’ attompL fell short.
