INCREASED RAILWAY FARES

The members of the Mbera Sporta and1 Ratepayers^- Leagle aie entering a vigorous protest against the increase in the workers' tickets on the railways in the valley. Following a letter of protest to the Minister of Railways, a petition is being circulated. The letter to the Minister reads as follows :— /'To-the Hon the Minister of 'Railways, ' Dear Sir, —I am directed by the tisers of Workers' Tickets in the Mo era district, to emphatically protest at tJltt action of the. Government in raising the weakly fare. Qne can only realise the position when one looks at the huge amount to be raised from the workers arriving at their destinations before 8 o'clock each morning, of whom, I am told, over a quarter reside in the Hutt Valley. The obtaining of that money is a direct attack upon tie workers, as other tickets have not been increased in proportion. If this policy is persisted in, much hardship is going to toe caused to the many people the. Ow ernment lured out here by • promise of cheap houses and cheap rail fares. I earnestly ask you, sir, to immediately;, reconsider the matter and! do something to alleviate this unwarranted hardship. The workers of f>Ms valley fully appreciate the difficulty raider: which the Government is functioning, and agree there is need for reorganisation in train fares, but increased revenue should be Taised from all users of the Bail#ays, arid rio;t from oj*e section of the community.."—Signed! Jas. E. Napier, Hon. Secreiiary.
