-The attendance of members and friends at the November meeting gave practical testimony to the hold that the Institute movement exerts over all who come under its influence, for in spite of wind and rain, there was a splendid rally, members coming from. Lower Hutt and several even journeying from "Wellington, rather than miss the ingMr. Phillips of the Dominion Musemm gave a lecture on Maori Customs, and held the interest of all from/start to finish. He recounted legends and his-

torieal facts whicth. give rise to the supposition that the Maoris came from TJru'(srdiba/bly- the 'Biblical TJr) through India and Polynesia to Aotea, with particular reference to those tribes who settled in the Hutt Valley. He showed how their environment developed their national characteristics and influenced their customs and laws, particularly explaining the law of "Tapu," and illustrated his points with specimens of Maori implements. . -

At the close of the lecture Mr. Phillips kindly gave a 'demonstration and instruction Maori Flax Weaving.

~ Mrs Hawthorn, the President, voiced the thanks of all present and afternoon tea was served; under the direction of Mrs Wylie. «'. •
