NO MORE SMELLS FROM GEAR ISLAND.

Residents of the Hutt Valley still have vivid recollections of aii objectionable odoiir which could not, on any account, ibe confused with rt?he perfume «£ "flowers and which, /until a £emr months >go, offended their olfactory nerves -whenever the breezes came from tihie sea. X may be tSiat some have missed this link with the past, and have sought \o explain the reason foot the improvement in the "seaside air.-'.'. It will be remembered that these smells were a bi-product of the sausage-cas-ing factory^ situated on Gear, Island and were from time to time the subject of complaints to the Butt River Board. Some months ago when the matter last .came before the Board, Mr. G-. A. Gkapman, who was the founder of the business, but had severed his connection with it many years ago, undertook to interview the proprietors with a viewto having this nuisance stopped. At the meeting of the Biver Board last week, an application for renewal of the lease for a farther term of two years was receive^ from Messrs Berth. Levi and Co. Ltd., and Mr. Chapman reported that as t&e result of his reprosentations to the etunpany, machinery bas been in«tallod wtich will entirely do away with the *'smells,7 making' the industry as inoffensive a3 an ordinary butcher's shop.

The renewal of tie lease was granted and Mr. Chapman was warmly thanked for the interest he had taken in t&e matter.
