'MEMORIAL STONE TO LATE MB. LAING-MEASON.
SUBSCRIPTIONS INVITED
For some time past the Board has been endeavouring to have a memorial erected to the memory of the late Mr Laing-Meason, who was the board's engineer. Although , a .suitable stone and the site has already been found, the board is limited by law in the amount of unauthorised expenditure, being allowed only 1 per cent on the general rates. It is therefore desired, as the work woudd cost about £50, that public spirited citizens would contribute something toward the cost.
The chairman, stated that at present the stone, which weighs" about 10 tons, was lying on the river bank near Belmont. The cost estimated includes its removal to the proposed site at the approach of the old briage, on the site of the old police station, placing it in a base of concrete, properly dressing it, and having a suitable inscription engraved.
Mr G. A. Chapman and Mr J. Mitchell started the subscription list, each donating £2/2/-. \
DAMAGE BY BOYS,
HUTT GOLF CLUB COMPLAINS
The Secretary of the Hutt Golf Club wrote stating that his committee was. having some trouble in keeping unauthorised boys, from playing on the club's property and doing damage to same, ami intimated that a complaint had been lodged with the police with a view to securing their co-operation.
"The boys are using slash-hooks," the seefetary writes, ( l to cut away gorse on the riverbank in an endeavour to find golf balls. We take it that the board looks upon gorse as a protection against floods, and if you could mention the matter to the police it would strengthen our complaint and assist us to have the nuisance abated:" .
The chairman: "1 don't think any damage is being done by boys. If they are cutting any gorse, which is being cut by our employees well, so much the better." He moved the letter be received. Mr Gostelow seconded.—Carried.
