The engineer reported at. Monday's •Council inecting that 15 chains of new 4in. Mannesman steel water-mains been, laid along Old Military Road. This brought forth a protest from Cr. Campbell who asked if the council knew of the excellent .steel pipes being made at Onekhaka.

Our well known townsman, Mr.. L. W. Ferguson, who. started on his own acoount as a land estate agent about eighteen months ago in Bell's Buildingw, Main Street, now known as 57 High Street, Lower Hutt, has decided to extend his business to Petone and from to-day opens a.branch office at 3<> Cuba Street under the managiement of Mr. C. -Seddon, who is well and fav-' ouratoly known in the district as a suc•eessfnl salesman. Mr. Fergus oil has had many years' experience in the estate agency business haying been> in charge of Mesrs Leighton Ltd, Lower Hnrtt 6ffi.de for several years, and prior to that with. Messrs Dalgety and Co Ltd. We wish our townsman .every success in this extension: of business./

Recent; lectures at the Hutt Valley High. School have been ,Mr.' Gecil Smith', Qhief inspector of Forests, who spoke of the work of forestry ia IPew Zealand and abroad, chiefly from the geographical aspect; Captain. J. R. Middletori, 8.15 T., who threw new light on t«he Great Armada; and Mr. Johanr.es 0. AndieTson, who gave a vivid 4i<:eount of the life and. deeds of Te j^-ampai-alia. The lectures were- illustii.ted.and were most interesting and \ aluable to the pupils.

Messrs C. R. Barrett and F. H. Mullius are attending, as directors of the Hutt Valley Creditors' Association Ltd, the I>ominion Confierence of affiliated Corporations which is at. present being lield in Hastings. It is understood that several important remits of interest to the local shareholdei-s abe upon the agenda paper for discussion.
