RAILWAY APPRENTICES' BALL.
The first annual ball given .by the railway apprentices took place in the new- hall at. the Works on Wednesday, July 16th. Tho railway employees are most fortunate in having such a delightful building in which to gather socially. It was erected about a year ago. A commodious entrance hall leads to the main building in which is a cosy annex for those wishing to play cards. The hall is commodioiis and bright and thie stage is most effectively ornamented with painting which is an imitation of Maori carving. This is the work of Mr. Ru-e Parr, a workshop employee. On Wednesday evening the hall looked very gay with, its streamers, coloured lights and lycopodium, and during one of the dances all were onveloped with streamers and balloons and confetti, causing great fun. During the evening it was announced that t»he committee intend holding these dances fortnightly Proceeds go to the Christmas Tree Fund which, provides a free Christmas Tree .for all the children of workshop employees. Mt. Dv 3Faur was M.C., arid the new orchestra, composed of workshop employees, made their first appearance. are termed the "Shops Harmonic Orchestra," and is composed of the following gentlemen: Messrs J. Bolton, A. Clark, M. Robertson, K. Abel, A. Kaye, F. Hale and R. W. Jones.
