WAINUI-O-MATA WOMEN'S INSTITUTE.

The monthly meeting of the Wainui-o-mata Women's Institute took place in the Public Hall. Despite drastic weatheT conditions there was a very creditable attendance of members who .thoroughly appreciated the on "Antarctica." Tthe lecturer, Mr. Leigh Hunt, dealt fully with the points of relationship between the Southern Continent and Now Zealand. The north and south polar regions were compared, the difference in formation being remarked upon, the huge mountain ranges with Mt. Erebus' flaming crown in the south', while tlhe north sloped inwards like a gigantic lake. The wonderful]! phenomena, AuTora Borealis arid Aurora Australis were commented upon, and the colour scheme of this unfrequented region was said to be indescribable, so glorious are its tints and hues. Tdre wild desolation of parts of this region was brought thome to the audience when Mr Hunt observed that the wind's rate of travel]: equals 100 to 200 miles per hour, over ice country. The mirages, of great frequency, were noted, wMle sound and visibility were mentioned, and also the marvellous fact that these regions are germless —a wonderful healtth. resort. The flora and fauna received ample attention, most interesting information in connection with •these being given. The opinions of su-ch men as Six. Douglas Mawson, Commanders Byrd and Peaey were quoted by t»h* lecturer and personal anecdotes greatly enhanced the pleasure of the audience. A cordial vote of thanks was (proposed by t»lie President (Mrs. L. Wood), wiuo expressed the hope that the Institute migtht again be favouTod by a lecture from Mr.' Hunt.

At the conclusion of afternoon tea a presentation of a handsome dinner waggon was made to a departing member—Mrs.'. Smith, secretary pro tern. Mrs- Smith sui-fcab'l'y thanked the members of the Institute and a most enjoyable afternoon terminated.
