T-he Necessity of this work may be .gathered from the facts that to date . we have hud 25. callers, given away 'three hundred garments (in nine days) .23 pair* of boots and shoes, 11 coats, a iblankev - s-heets, 2 cots, several hats, collars and ties to residents. of Lower Hutt, Petone. Normandale, Belmont, etc. We are very low in stocky but. iope before this is in print to -liave Tcceivo'l mure parcels. We are promised some, and there is a /good got to give away to anyone needing same and willing to gea it. THE UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEM (To."-the Editor)
Sir, —Last January you "published a lert/ter of mine in your paper in .cqn&€*eti<m with the unemployment problem ■wMcii is still rife in tire district" and
•aiddfi a footnote to such letter that upon making inquiries, you learnt that it was the intention of fhc Borough Council to fully investigate the problem of" unemployment before the winter, and t-hat it should not bo sufficiently a-eute^at this time' of the year to call foT extraordinary measures on the part of t-h.e , loeaO bodies. As you are probably awaro the . uiieni- s .ployment problem is a very serious one, bo serious, indeed, that the Red Cross Society Shave arranged to come to the rescue of urgent cases. This being the ease ,it looks as if the Borough. Council are not troubling much about the distress in the Borough, if so, why is it nee«<srary for th»> Minister of Public Works to send unemployed Hutt resid- ' enlts on relief works in the Wairarapa? Wanganui, I sec l>y the papers, look after their own unemployed, and so gJiould the Hutt Boroug-h Council. It ha& . -to be borne in mind that a few yeaTs ago LoweT Hntt was composed chiefly of residents who were fortunate enough to be able lo retire from their laibours, therefore were not effected by any unemployment pToblem, but at -the present time several of the unemploye:! are paying rates to the Council for whom, I maintain, sometihing should be done the Borough Council.
